Gary Allard, 3RDSPACE member and one of our 3 featured artists in San Diego Unseen, An Urban Portrait.

It began with a walk. A beautiful winter day downtown. Seventy degrees, sunshine, and no destination. I begin to notice things. Parts of the city that I had not seen before. A humble apartment building in the shadows of a slick green glass monolith. A depression-era store front hidden behind colorful deli banners. The grimy cocktail bar that seems to have always been there yet I’d never noticed it. Doorways with long forgotten business names illustrated on the marble floors. A hotel sign where no hotel exists.

This is San Diego past and present. The architecture of yesterday complimenting its contemporary counterpart. The old is coexisting with the new, and I’m fascinated by it. When I began this project I felt as though I knew the city well, knew it’s quirks and most interesting areas. But as I walked the streets to photograph it, I saw a deeper side of our city. One that revealed itself slowly and became more meaningful the more photographs I made. I’d revisit a building several times and it would seem to have changed just a little every time I saw it. A city in motion.

During the process of this project, I have come to know San Diego better. To feel a little closer to a city that I perhaps have not taken a long enough look at. And, to see the unseen that makes our urban landscape so unique. I invite everyone to do the same whether you’re in San Diego or beyond. Go out and See.

I consider Visual Communication my ‘first language’ – with English following a close second. Evident at a very early age, images spoke to me in ways far more clearly than the written word. Color, texture, layers, emotion, authenticity, and story. This is the vocabulary I recognize.

For more than 15 years I have helped people, brands and businesses polish their visual message. Through photography I’m allowed to walk that lovely line between art and commerce, observation and intention, chance and necessity and to create emotion without using words. That’s a pretty good feeling.

I’m deeply inspired by the people and places that make me want to laugh, sing, eat, drink, travel, and explore. New faces and old friends. Moments and memories, big or small, that make me reach for a camera.

I was immersed in photography at a very early age, growing up (in San Diego) around darkrooms and hasseblads. Later on it became apparent that photography beckoned as a consuming passion. Whether commercially-oriented or shots involving his love of bicycles, I’m always out for a striking image, capturing details to convey feeling in that which is not always apparent.

TRIART, The Next Art Show, and 3RDSPACE present San Diego Unseen, an Urban Portrait. This is our first photographic art show, featuring 3 awesome photographers and YOU.

A portrait isn’t just a moment captured in time. It’s a moment removed from it. In this show we’ll slow down, take pause, and SEE our urban neighborhoods. We will honor the milieu of urban landscape and artful moments that often race past our precipitant awareness and attention – the unseen. Our home.

YOU’RE THE ARTISTS. Please send your COOLEST, most ARTISTIC photographs of urban San Diego to info@3rdpace.co (under 20 mb). Whether they come from your iPhone, Android, Polaroid, or something much fancier, doesn’t matter….. The rules are simple – just shoot from your hip, from your heart and from your hood.

SEND PHOTOS ON OR BEFORE MAY 20.

All photographs will be displayed at the show, and the top ones will make our coffee table book to commemorate this special event. Yes, you can brag to your friends that your work is published. Attendees will vote for the best pics, and the featured photographers will select the best ones for the book. First prize participant will also receive a limited edition portrait from the show and a month membership to 3rdSpace, Co-Working and Club For the Creative.*

Cost is $10.00. Partial proceeds to benefit the San Diego Chapter of Engineers Without Borders

INTERVIEW WITH JIM RULAND, HOST OF VERMIN ON THE MOUNT (our first blog)

Jim Ruland is hosting an event at 3rdspace called Vermin on the Mount on Saturday, February 11. Here he is to tell us a few things about it.

3RDSPACE: What’s Vermin on the Mount?

RULAND: Vermin on the Mount is an irreverent, irregular reading series I started in L.A.’s Chinatown back in 2004. The idea was to bring together different combinations of emerging writers – novelists, bloggers, journalists, punk rockers, etc. – and put them on the same stage. It’s something that doesn’t work with music (when was the list time you saw a cellist perform with a metal band and a country crooner?) but works surprisingly well with writers.

3RDSPACE: Why Vermin?

RULAND: The bar where we hold the events in L.A. is called The Mountain, so it’s a pun on Sermon on the Mount. Maybe I should call the San Diego events Vermin in Space or 3rdrat…

3RDSPACE: Why did you bring the show to San Diego?

RULAND: It was time. I’ve experimented here and there. We’ve had shows at Voz Alta’s old location, Sushi before they shut down, and Space for Art, but I’ve been eager to put down roots and 3rdpsace is a great fit for what Vermin is all about. I feel it’s important that literary events be free so that attendees can support the artists they choose to support by buying their books. That way the money goes right in the writers’ pockets. The public wins. The writers win. Book culture wins.

3RDSPACE: What is The Rattling Wall?

RULAND: The Rattling Wall is a new Los Angeles-based literary journal that specializes in fiction, travel essays, and poetry. They are sponsoring the reading at 3rdSpace on Saturday, Feb. 11 as well as the reading in L.A. the following night at The Mountain Bar in Chinatown.

3RDSPACE: What can we expect on February 11?

RULAND: The unexpected! We’ve got a transgressive novelist from San Francisco, an OCD memoir, a jailhouse confessional, bartender poetry, a TV writer, and a video game addict. I try to assemble writers that complement each other but I also insist that the writers read whatever the hell they want to read. So if a sex addict wants to read about becoming born again (or vice versa) that’s fine with me.

3RDSPACE: So we’re talking PG-13 material?

RULAND: It’s definitely not kid-friendly, so spring for the babysitter.

3RDSPACE: Anything else we should know?

RULAND: One of the things people like most about Vermin on the Mount is the free raffle. You can win books, t-shirts, and other rat-related goodies. While the raffle is free the cash bar is not and there will be books and merchandise for sale as well. See you at 3rdspace on Saturday, February 11!

The 3rdSpace Blog will be coming soon. We promise you it will not suck. If it does, you can tell us… right here on the blog.So what will it be? Well, it’ll be very different from most blogs. The articles will be written by our very talented, interesting, and witty members, who are authorities in their creative and technical fields. But the content won’t end with the reading/viewing and commenting. Like 3rdSpace itself, it’s designed to connect. Connect ideas and people, and put them all to action. They will often be followed by helpful, interesting, fun, engaging events at 3rdSpace. So you’ll read an article on how javascript can beat up query (or something totally nerdy like that), then show up to the monthly meetup, where the author will give a presentation and host a discussion. Or, you’ll come hear the writer of a hilarious story read some other irreverent writings at Vermin On The Mount. Or, you’ll come participate in a discussion of a thought provoking topic. Or come to an art show and meet the successful artist who writes about her challenging artistic journey. Or you’ll read an article about the cool things you can do in wordpress (like adding a blog to your website to increase traffic), then come to a workshop hosted by that writer. You get the idea.It will also serve the community as a tremendous resource for talent, while showcasing some of the coolest stuff worth sharing by some of the most interesting and creative people of San Diego. Stay tuned. Oh, and if you want to comment on this to offer suggestions, etc… we’re all eyes and open minds.

QUESTION: Where do your New Year’s Resolutions get you?

Why wait for the new year to make an important resolution? Waiting for some symbolic date that means nothing more than funny hats and wicked hangovers will get you nowhere. NOW is the time for your resolve. The difference between making resolutions that go nowhere and the resolve of making positive changes happen right here, right now…..might just be in the Space. So look at that picture again and tell us what you see.

And what does 3rdSpace have to do with your resolutions? Well, do any of these apply? This is the 3rdSpace Challenge – Resolve them NOW&HERE, and we’ll donate your first month’s membership fee to a great charity!

I will stop working in isolation.

We have a GREAT co-working community at 3rdSpace. If you’re a freelancer who’s tired of working alone from home or going to some local beatnik coffee shop to be alone together, then we have the answer. Our community is made up of people like you (unless this isn’t like you) – creative, professional, down to earth, positive, considerate, friendly, intelligent, ambitious, who demand the best from themselves, seek the best in others, and who are cool like the gang on Happy Days. If you fit that description, you’ll likely fit into 3rdSpace! If you’re experiencing a few too many creative blocks, immerse yourself in a creative environment and see the difference it makes.

I will be more productive.

Many credible studies show that people are much more productive when working with others, particularly in a community to which they belong and with others who get things done. Without boring you with details of studies, let’s just say that that productivity is contagious. Co-Working can help you become more productive, and our members will agree. And so does the Googler, in case you don’t believe us.

I will surround myself with success.

One of the primary missions of 3rdSpace is to be a vehicle of support to our members to help each one realize his/her highest creative, professional and personal potential. Immersing yourself in an environment of doers and achievers is contagious, particularly when that community has your back. If you want more inspiration than the hero there next to you playing dungeons and dragons on his computer next to the cream and sugar station, then think about improving your environment. We’re a community of mostly freelancers who have stuck our necks out to be our own bosses (and some stuck their middle fingers out to their former bosses). We want to support you and your admirable decision to be self employed, to CREATE something of value to others and invaluable to yourself.

I will get more involved.

3rdSpace is more than co-working. We have constant events at the Space on our calendar to keep you engaged and connected. Many of our members host workshops, meetings, discussions, collaborative events, art shows, fundraising, jam sessions, etc. It’s a creative space. It’s your space to create. You can host your own events or get involved in the many events that take place here. You’ll also make tons of great connections and will NEVER have a shortage of opportunities to be INVOLVED.

I will make more friends.

3rdSpace is all about making meaningful connections. We have regular social functions (check our calendar, including our upcoming Christmas Party). Come meet like-minded people who share your passions, talents, values, and interests. And did I mention we were cool like the Happy Days gang? I know, some of you don’t remember Happy Days, but we’re pretty cool. And not just like Fonzie. They were all cool in their own way.

I will expand my personal and professional network.

Umm….you’ll expand your network. Now just join the club already!

I will make a difference in the lives of those around me:

You might just find that the greatest reward in being a 3rdSpace member is what you give back. That might be a simple (and invaluable) pat on someone’s back, sharing some great ideas, volunteering, or lending some of your expertise. While not expected of members, their support of others has at least as much value to themselves. Peculiar life law. Also, 3S is a big supporter of Engineers Without Borders, so 100% of your membership dollars for December will go to a good cause . Engineers Without Borders is an amazing organization with a critical mission to bring clean water to developing countries around the world. Your December dollars will make a huge difference in the lives they effect, so if this is the only reason you have to sign up this month rather than next, it’s a damn good one.
