San Diego Unseen, An Urban Portrait is a comprehensive look at the often unseen side of San Diego and its urban neighborhoods, shot by both professional and amateur photographers. Each of the book’s contributors were asked to “shoot from their ‘hoods, from the hip, and from the heart,” resulting in a gorgeous portrayal of San Diego that tells the story of 20 photographers and their individual experiences in discovering our urban neighborhoods.

The project originated as a photographic art show at 3RDSPACE, featuring three talented San Diego Photographers – Gary Allard, Justin Lee, and Sean Cassidy. In the course of discussing themes for the show with the featured photographers, it became clear to 3RDSPACE Owner and Founder Peter McConnell that there were just too many stories to be told by three people. A call went out for photographers to submit photographs that they felt represented the ‘unseen’ side of San Diego. As McConnell explains in the book, “This book was created for and by the people who live in our wonderful Urban San Diego communities. We challenged those who would attend our show in University Heights to take part in it. To experience their communities in a new way, visually, artistically, and even meditatively.” The pieces received from these additional contributors were displayed and voted upon at that first event, and the photographers who received the most votes were to be included alongside the three featured photographers in a new book – San Diego Unseen: An Urban Portrait.

In addition, the photographer whose image received the most votes, would be added as a fourth featured photographer in the new book. Photographer Rachel Bellinsky was the winning participant, and her works will be featured at the upcoming Book Release on March 2nd. Bellinsky explains how she discovers new, ‘unseen’ parts of San Diego: “On mornings when the marine layer is thick, and late afternoons when the shadows are long, I take my dog and camera and go on an expedition. I hunt for things that grow and things that rust. The threadbare, the splintering and the newly sprouted. Creatures of any kind. Weeded old lots, and weathered houses. San Diego is so much more than beaches and sunshine.”

This Book Release marks the first publication by 3RDSPACE and its members, many of whom were featured as photographers in the book. McConnell hopes that this is the first of many publications by 3RDSPACE, and he will continue to hold events and produce works that shine a light on the current creative renaissance happening in San Diego. He says of San Diego’s cultural growth, “I love what novelist Neil Gaiman said about being creative – ‘Nobody gets to be you, except you. Nobody has your point of view, except you. Nobody gets to bring to the worlds the things that you get to bring to the world – uniquely get to bring to the world – except you.’ Discovering and expressing ourselves is the essence and soul of an individual, which pretty much makes us all artists in our own way. At 3RDSPACE we aim to foster a culture of professional and personal discovery through a community dedicated to bringing cool things into the world. In a broader sense, San Diego is discovering and rediscovering its own unique identity. This has defined what I’ve perceived as its own cultural movement that demands creativity from everyone contributing to its collective soul. ” The book has already made a significant impact in the community. It will be sold at the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, Nelson Photo, who are co-sponsoring the event along with the San Diego Chapter of American Photographic Artists.
