San Diego Unseen - An Urban Portrait

This book was created for and by the people who live in our wonderful Urban San Diego communities. We challenged those who would attend our show in University Heights to take part in it. To experience their communities in a new way, visually, artistically, and even meditatively. Some of these photographers are amateurs, some pros. Their pictures were shot from cell phones, polaroids, and fancy schmancy cameras, too. The rules were very simple: “shoot from your hip, shoot from your heart and shoot from your hood.” And they did. This is what they saw. We hope you’ll see it, too.

"On mornings when the marine layer is thick, and late afternoons when the shadows are long, I take my dog and camera and go on an expedition. I hunt for things that grow and things that rust. The threadbare, the splintering and the newly sprouted. Creatures of any kind. Weeded old lots, and weathered houses. San Diego is so much more than beaches and sunshine."

"This is San Diego past and present. The architecture of yesterday complementing-or sometimes in contempt of its contemporary counterpart. The old coexists with the new, and I’m fascinated by it. When I began this project I felt as though I knew the city well, knew its quirks, cliques, and most interesting areas. But as I walked the streets to photograph it, I saw a deeper side of our city. One that revealed itself slowly and became more meaningful with every new photograph I made. A silent conversation. I’d revisit a building several times and it would seem to have changed just a little every time. A thousand photographs later and the city is still revealing secrets."

"I’m continually fascinated by how our city is full of detail and its own unique beauty. It’s always moving, always changing. Capturing that which is always evolving and surrounding me will always draw me in as long as I can hold a camera."

"The 92101 Rooftops project was born out of a collaboration of two long time friends; Justin Lee of Justin Lee Photography and Mike Ciampa of 92101 Urban Living. Justin would provide the artistic talent and eye for a unique perspective, and Mike would “open the door” by getting Justin in the right place to connect you with an unseen cityscape."
